Hypovitaminosis D

Hypovitaminosis D is a very widespread condition in Italy, mainly in the elderly but also among the young.

The main factors that can influence the state of vitamin D include intense skin pigmentation, percentage of skin exposed to the sun, seasonality, latitude, sun filters application, irradiation time, age, obesity, and use of certain types of pharmacological treatments.

In children, vitamin D deficiency can develop rickets, a typical developmental disorder characterized by reduced mineralization of the bones, which can become deformed resulting in disability.
Rickets may also lead to long-term negative effects such as altered peak bone mass acquisition processes and increased risk of osteoporosis in adulthood.

In young adults and the elderly, the persistence of a vitamin D deficient state may instead lead to osteomalacia and contribute to the pathogenesis of osteoporosis.
Hypovitaminosis D may be the most common cause of non-response to drug therapy for osteoporosis.

Several scientific studies have described a widespread condition of hypovitaminosis D also in patients suffering from many other diseases, including rheumatic, dermatological, and immune system disorders, among others.
